The Suffolk Road Recreation Ground, better known as the dog park, is currently undergoing a make-over. An enclosed, accessible playground made from natural materials is being constructed in one corner of the space and is due to open soon.
A group of local parents, the Friends of Suffolk Road Recreation Ground, three of whom are Harrodian parents, has been instrumental in making it happen. With the help of the Barnes Community Association, they were successful in applying for a grant from Richmond Council and are now fundraising to cover the remaining costs. The new playground will encourage more children to be active, and is the only one in Barnes that will offer accessible equipment.
Harrodian School, which is just around the corner from Suffolk Road, is keen to support the local community in the development of the playground. This Valentine’s Day, Headmaster Mr Hooke and a group of Harrodian pupils presented the Friends of Suffolk Road Recreation Ground and Steven Mindel (Chairman of the Barnes Community Association) with a donation cheque for £2,000 – a contribution to the building and planting costs of the playground. Local MP, Zac Goldsmith, accepted the cheque on behalf of the local borough and said, ‘This is a magnificent new facility, and it will enhance the community and become a much-loved place for children of all ages. It would not have been possible without the support of generous individuals, businesses, schools and I am so grateful to Harrodian for their contribution.’
